Mariam Sambe, Educator and Youth Worker

Title
Educator and Youth Worker, Founder at ABA

What motivated you to start this organization ?
When I was a child I attended several different schools because my parents travelled a lot. I quickly noticed that the schools in which I was the happiest were the ones in which I succeeded the most. The education I got from these schools was different from the type of education you get from the ‘mass education system’. We had motivated and experienced teachers, interesting courses, an abundance of materials, and a varied student body. Unfortunately, these types of schools come with a cost. Seeing that only the wealthy could attend those schools bothered me because I knew of several students (my friends and neighbors) who were extremely wise but did not get the opportunity I had. As opposed to me, they hated school. These children had little chance of making it to university or even completing high school. That to me was unfair. This is what motivated me to open an alternative school like ABA. A school of excellence that is not only accessible to the wealthy, but also to those considered to be “unfortunate”. I think that quality education should be a right, and not a privilege.

How many children do you plan to register every year?
There will be 72 new students registered every year. Each classroom will hold 24 children per class (24 * 3 = 72).

ABA will be constructed in 3 different phases, the first one being the daycare part. The subsequent classes will be added as students reach those levels. Consequently, ABA will be launched with the following deliverables:

Phase 1: Day care (1 & 2 year olds): Opening in September 2015
Phase 2: Kindergarten (3 to 5 year olds): Opening in September 2017
Phase 3: Primary school (Grades ): Opening in September 2020
Phase 4: Secondary school (Grades 9 to 12): Opening in September 2028

Do you mind sharing one of your favorite quotes with us?
“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” – Plato

Are you looking forward to Manyatta Cares?
Yes, definitely. I have heard great things about Manyatta events. So, I am looking forward to meeting the Manyatta family, and actively being involved. I am also eager to meet the other organizations that will be featured and the keynote speakers. It ought to be a promising event!
