Sekeya Kouadio-Payne, Senior Actuarial Analyst

Tell us a bit about you.
I was born in Quebec City to a High School Teacher mother and a Pediatrician father. I was raised in the city of Daloa, the capital of the Haut-Sassandra Region in western Côte d'Ivoire. After High School, I moved back to Canada to attend Laval University’s Actuarial School, from where I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Actuarial Science, with a strong interest for the branch of general insurance. After graduation, I continued to the Masters program in Actuarial Science. In August 2011, I’ve been hired by Economical Insurance, one of Canada's leading property and casualty insurance companies, where I currently hold the position of Senior Actuarial Analyst.

How do you stay on top of your game?
One of the key things which help me moving forward is to revisit my goals and dreams on a daily basis so they stay up front in my heart and mind. In other words, I let myself be led by my dreams. I also re-evaluate myself regularly and stay opened to constructive feedbacks. In addition, I have the chance to be surrounded with family and friends who positively support me, inspire me, and bring out my best.

Do you have a piece of advice for aspiring young men and women who wish to be successful in your field?
Always remember that there is no shortcut to success, which means it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and motivation; Staydisciplined and emphasize quality over quantity in your studies. Most importantly... don’t get discouraged easily!!!

What is your definition of leadership?
Leadership is having a vision, sharing that vision and inspiring others to support your vision while creating their own. It also is the ability to guide others without force into a direction or decision that leaves them still feeling empowered and accomplished.
