How did your business idea come about?
Numbers have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Egypt, a small group of friends and me discussed potential business ventures that could best serve our community. I knew instantly that the accounting profession was my calling and that this would be my opportunity to give back. I love everything about accounting – more than just the numbers.
After several months of research, learning and growth, I finally became a practicing accountant. Now, with over 25 years of experience, I am happy to continue my work and have retained my focus of giving back to my community.
What makes your business unique?
I have been in the accounting and taxes practice for over 25 years, assisting clients in many areas including handling Canada Revenue Agency audits, tax planning and bookkeeping. I also assisted clients in obtaining financing, preparing business plans, and consulting on payroll and accounting softwares. My diverse client base at HF Accounting & Taxes includes manufacturing, non-profit organizations, pharmacists, restaurants and food vendors, physicians and family businesses.
I add value to my clients’ businesses by developing and implementing innovative solutions. In support of this, my down-to-earth and hands-on, approach allows me to quickly identify problems and areas for improvement. As a cornerstone of my professional experience, I have made it a priority to develop a broad and diverse skill set with a particular eye toward customer service, and helping my clients to take financial decisions based on their business needs.
Can you tell us whether and how your background has been an asset in your career?
In Egypt, I graduated from the University of Ain-Shams with a major in business. Shortly, I joined KPMG, which is one of the biggest accounting firms in the Middle East and the world. This opportunity gave me the chance to become a Chartered Accountant in Egypt. When I moved to Toronto, I had my mind set to receiving a Canadian designation. I fell in love with the Certified Management Accountant program, and was able to receive my designation a few years after I came to Canada.
I consider myself very lucky to live in Toronto. Toronto is Canada’s largest city, the fourth largest in North America, and home to a diverse population of about 2.8 million people. This multicultural city has allowed me to build my business network. Dissirama is one of the people I met and she quickly introduced me to the African community. I found that Egyptians and other Africans share many common values; this might be because we live on the same continent.
