SHELTER THEM BATARURE

HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ORGANIZATION?

The Mission of this Organization is to empower vulnerable and underprivileged children in Rwanda, by first ensuring they are integrated in an environment where their basic growth and development needs are met, and by subsequently providing them and their families with the tools and resources they need for these children to have a bright, independent and sustainable future ahead. Shelter Them is not focused on aid. The Organization is instead focused on empowering children with the tools they need to design their own bright future.

This is achieved in the following ways:
1. Integration of orphans and other vulnerable and underprivileged children in families;
2. Creation of the conditions in which underprivileged families with children can generate an
environment for these children to grow and develop that is humane, sane and healthy,
through:
a. Provision of exhaustive support, including health care, socio-economic and spiritual support;
b. Provision of access to education;
3. Empowering underprivileged families with children to develop self-sustaining ways to live and work, ensuring children are given an adequate environment to grow and develop that will allow them to also become independent and self-sufficient in the future;
4. To network and create partnerships with other National and International Non-Governmental Organizations, National Institutions, and other organizations involved in similar activities.

WHAT IS THE VISION FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

We hope to be able to complete the building project in the Bugesera district in Rwanda. This project includes building a vocational school, a rehabilitation housing complex and a recreation facility. I have attached some information about this project.

WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE WITHIN THE DIASPORA?

Jocelyne and I have connected Rwandans who live in Canada through our events and contacts. Many other friends of Rwanda from different countries in Africa are connected with us as well. We are also involved in the community through different local initiatives. One example is a lady we met.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU face with BUSINESSES AND ENTREPRENEURS?

We find businesses and entrepreneurs are less willing to support international NGOs like Shelter-Them over the local organizations. That makes it more difficult and challenging for our marketing.

WHAT IS YOUR NETWORKING PHILOSOPHY?

Shelter Them values networking as a learning tool and to share knowledge and information. It makes us stronger as an organization and it allows us to grow independently as well as to partner up and unite forces with other NGOs sharing the same values and vision.
